January School-wide Service: Collecting House Supplies
During the month of January Cabin John students will collect items to donate to the Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless (MCCH) AND THEN during MLK Week of Service (Jan 20-24) students will have an opportunity to sort the items collected that we will donate (SSL hours for students helping to sort on Jan 21, 22 and 23-after school). This project starts on Thursday, January 2 so start bringing supplies in then. Extended — Box Tops Contest! Through January
Kickstarting the New Year with “healthy” groceries? Save those labels to help Cabin John! (Also, wouldn’t you like to win Apple AirPods with charging case?)
Bring an envelope with your Box Tops to the main office or the media center and drop it off in the boxes. Don’t forget to write your name and grade in the envelope.
Every ten Box Tops means a possibility to enter the contest. You can leave as many envelopes as you wish since they will be cumulative, so we will counting and adding your Box Tops every time you donate. All the proceeds will fund CJMS programs.
Please keep collecting BoxTops during the holidays. If you are scanning receipts to have your BoxTops purchases recognized, please email your earnings to boxtops.cjms@gmail.com
Students can participate in our Box Tops contest until January 24, 2020.
The winner will be announced the first week of February 2020.
MCCPTA Health Forum — Tomorrow! (Jan. 11)
The Montgomery County Council of PTAs (MCCPTA) is holding its third annual Health and Wellness Forum from 1–5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11 at Earle B. Wood Middle School.
The event will feature a keynote address, a resource fair and breakout sessions on a variety of topics, including teen depression; stress and anxiety; vaping; the LGBTQ experience in MCPS; mindfulness; trauma; accessing needed care; cross-cultural mental health challenges; and The Landing, an MCPS recovery school. There will be a student talkback session from 4–5 p.m.
There will also be free mental health first aid training from 8 a.m.–4 p.m. (free, advance registration is required); a principals-only workshop, “How to Make School Trauma-Informed;” and a mock teen bedroom trailer, which will help educate parents on the warning signs of drug abuse.

Reminder! Come Tonight: 7 p.m. December 10 — PTSA Parent and Student Technology Discussion
Please join us for an important discussion within our community. Immediately following a brief PTSA meeting, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, December 10, the PTSA is hosting a joint effort with CJMS to bring a panel of experts on technology to benefit both our parent and student communities. We will have two high school students to offer real world experience on navigating the good and the bad in an ever changing technology world with advice for students as they progress from 6th grade to high school. Our adults panelists will offer practical advice and information on how our kids are using technology, suggestions on what to watch out for, how to communicate on these topics, and useful tips on parenting in the age of technology and social media. No sign up, just come ready to listen and ask questions!

Congratulations to Model UN Students!
Eleven CJMS students attended the GWCIA XXIV Model UN Conference on the weekend prior to Thanksgiving. All of our students represented CJMS with decorum and attentiveness.
Two of our students received awards; Pavani Durbhakula (8th grade) representing the World Farmers’ Organization Advisory Board, received Best Delegate (a first place award) in her committee on the Food and Agriculture Organization.
Our second student, Nuri Park (6th grade) representing the Commissioner from the Slovak Republic, received a Verbal Commendation in her committee on the European Union Refugee Crisis of 2015.
