The following courses will be offered:
Focus Algebra: This three-week class is for students who, with additional mathematics instruction during the summer, will be able to maximize their potential to be successful in an above-level mathematics class in the fall of 2014, although participation in this class does not guarantee that a child will be placed in an above-level mathematics class in fall 2015. Decisions about school year course placement will be made on an individual basis. Focus on Algebra emphasizes concepts and skills necessary for success in Algebra 1. The program reviews content on integers, rational numbers, expressions, and equations. Preview of content from the Algebra 1 curriculum includes variations, quadratics, and monomials/binomials. Conceptual development of concepts, content, and processes is addressed as students are taught concrete understanding through manipulatives, transitioning to pictorial representation, to abstract understanding through paper/pencil problems.
Common Core 7th Grade Math Support: This four-week class is for incoming 7th grade students who, with additional mathematics instruction during the summer, will be prepared for Common Core Math 7 OR Common Core Investigations in Mathematics (IM) in the fall of 2015. This course is designed primarily as a review of the content, concepts, and skills from the Common Core Math 6 curriculum and as a preview of some of the available required content, concepts, and skills from both Common Core Math 7 and Common Core IM. This class is open only to students entering Grade 7 who are enrolled or being considered for enrollment in Common Core Math 7 OR IM for fall 2015.
Reading 7/8: The Intervention Reading class for incoming 7th and 8th graders will consist of a maximum class size of 20 students. The four-week program will provide reading instruction for students who have not been successful with English/Reading curriculum and/or are at risk of not meeting the proficiency level on the PARCC. This class will consist of a review of content, concepts, and skills from the 7th and 8th grade curriculum, as well as a preview of the skills of the 7th and 8th grade curriculum students will experience in the 2015-2016 school year.
All classes will have a maximum of 20 students and registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Classes fill up quickly each year. Plan now for summer!
