Pedestrian Safety Assessment—Family Feedback Needed

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is conducting safety assessments at 15 schools, including Bells Mill Elementary and Churchill High School, to better understand the needs of students who walk or bike to school. As part of this effort, MCDOT is seeking parent feedback through a brief survey to help identify areas where new crosswalks or sidewalks may be needed, as well as potential safety concerns that should be addressed.

Although Cabin John Middle School is not directly included in these assessments, many of the sidewalks, crosswalks, and roadways used by our students are part of the review. If you live in the Churchill or Bells Mill areas, we encourage you to complete the survey and help MCDOT make our students’ school commutes safer.

PTSA Volunteers Needed!

We are busy planning for the upcoming school year and we need to fill a few key positions! In addition to help with many of our activities, we are looking for committee chairs to lead the following activities. Support and training provided!

  • Spirit Wear Sales — Help coordinate sale of existing inventory at back to school events. Brainstorm new offerings and an efficient way to manage sales/fundraising moving forward. Coordinate with the School Store Committee to sell relevant items.
  • School Store — Help set up the school store for the year. Coordinate/train volunteers to staff the store (open at lunchtime generally once a week). The school store is a fundraiser for PTSA.
  • Restaurant Nights — Organize restaurant nights to raise funds for PTSA throughout the area in Potomac and North Potomac.
  • Online Auction — As PTSA looks to increase its fundraising this year, we’re considering an online auction for the spring. We’re looking for volunteers to help organize and solicit donations.
  • Fundraising — As PTSA looks to increase its fundraising this year, we’re looking for some general fundraising help. Bring your creativity and skills!
  • Reflections Art Program — Each year National PTA sponsors the Reflections Program. We need a CJMS coordinator to collect and oversee entries that are submitted and may move on to county/state rounds. Coordinate distribution of recognition items.
  • Welcome Back Staff Breakfast — Each year PTSA provides a breakfast with parent-donated items and purchased catering. We need a volunteer to coordinate signup genius, order catering, and set up the breakfast. Held in August before school starts (exact date coming soon!)
  • Staff Holiday Cookie Buffet — Each year PTSA provides a holiday cookie buffet with parent-donated baked goods and some purchased options. We need a volunteer to coordinate signup genius, order cookies, and set up. Held before winter break (exact date coming soon!)
  • Staff Appreciation Week — Held May May 4-6, 2026 we’re looking for volunteers to organize ways to show our staff how much we appreciate them. Organize volunteer signups and order giveaways/food. Work with the PTSA board to manage budget and donations.
  • NAACP Parent Council Representative — Each school needs a representative on this council! We’ve been lucky to have a staff person, Ms. Hardy, represent CJMS but we’re looking for parents to get involved and represent the needs of these students!
  • MCCPTA Delegate (Churchill family) — Each school gets two delegates who can represent and vote within the Montgomery County Council of Parent Teacher Associations. This group works CLOSELY with the school system to advocate for students and teachers. CJMS has one delegate that represents students moving to Wootton and one for those going to Churchill. Delegates attend a monthly virtual assembly. If your student will go to Churchill, consider getting involved to make sure CJMS has a voice!! There are BIG issues being discussed for high school programming and boundaries and we need representation.

If you can help — either leading a committee or helping out — please fill out this form and we’d love to talk. We have a lot to accomplish this year and we really need every family to help!
