Pedestrian Safety Assessment—Family Feedback Needed

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is conducting safety assessments at 15 schools, including Bells Mill Elementary and Churchill High School, to better understand the needs of students who walk or bike to school. As part of this effort, MCDOT is seeking parent feedback through a brief survey to help identify areas where new crosswalks or sidewalks may be needed, as well as potential safety concerns that should be addressed.

Although Cabin John Middle School is not directly included in these assessments, many of the sidewalks, crosswalks, and roadways used by our students are part of the review. If you live in the Churchill or Bells Mill areas, we encourage you to complete the survey and help MCDOT make our students’ school commutes safer.

Help Shape the Future of Education in MCPS!

Do you want a voice in how curriculum and instruction are developed in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)? Are you passionate about making sure students, families, and teachers are heard in shaping MCPS’s educational vision?

The Montgomery County Council of PTAs (MCCPTA) is seeking PTSA representatives to serve on MCPS’s Curriculum Advisory Committees (CACs) and the Curriculum Advisory Assembly (CAA). These committees, run by MCPS, meet just four times a year—but your impact can last for years to come.

What you’ll do:

  • Join subject-specific CACs (like math, science, or language arts) and the broader CAA to learn about and weigh in on big-picture curriculum, assessment and instructional issues.
  • Ask questions, preview changes before they’re rolled out, and share your perspective.
  • Ensure the voices of parents, students, and teachers are represented.
  • Meet other MCCPTA reps, hear from central office, teachers and students, and share knowledge and experiences from all parts of the County

 Important details:

  • Meetings are held quarterly, usually from 4:15 to 6 p.m. by Zoom. Dates TBD. Reps only need to attend the half of the meeting dedicated to the subject matter-specific issues but are welcome to attend the broader Assembly as well.
  • We especially encourage representatives who can bring Special Education, ESOL, and Gifted Education perspectives, as well as voices from across Montgomery County’s diverse schools and communities.

 Apply by September 30!
Fill out this quick form to find out more information and get started: Apply Here.

Note that returning members must still fill out the form.

 Questions? Email esolvicechair@mccpta.org.

Together, we can make a real difference in strengthening MCPS’s curriculum for all students

Proposed PTSA Bylaws—Share Your Input

The PTSA is required to review its bylaws regularly to ensure compliance with state and national PTSA/PTA standards. Updated bylaws have been proposed, and will be presented for a vote at our next General Membership Meeting on Tuesday, October 14, at 6:00 p.m. (in person).

All PTSA members are encouraged to review the draft bylaws in advance, and participate in the discussion and vote during the October meeting. We look forward to welcoming many families as we consider this important update along with other agenda items.

Coding Opportunity at CJMS

Join MCode at CJMS! We are a club where students will learn the foundations of computer science and the basics of programming languages such as Python and will use those skills in fun projects and exercises.

We have multiple classes for varying levels of experience with computer science at Cabin John. Our beginner Python class is open to all and teaches the fundamentals of computer science through the widely-used and popular programming language Python. Students will be given projects to help them develop their programming skills as well as logical and problem solving skills. Our intermediate Python class builds on the skills taught in the beginner class as students learn to build data structures, create games and projects, and learn Object-Oriented Programming. This club is completely free, and students will need nothing but their laptops or school-provided chromebooks for either class. Interested students will have the opportunity to participate in fun activities like Coding Fests!
